What Is a Brain Wallet & How to Create Secure One?

There are many types wallets are in the market such as HD wallets, Multi-Sig wallets to secure crypto funds.

But the main problem with those wallets is they’re hard to crack by any third person even sometimes the owner of the wallet cannot able to access his own fund because of the hard passphrase (also called as a recovery phrase, seed phrase) used by the wallet.

To solve this problem Brain wallet emerged letting the user create a passphrase instead of a wallet.

What Is Brain Wallet?

A wallet main function is to store all your crypto funds by making sure the Private key which ensures you’re the owner of funds and Public key which used to send and receive funds and driven from Private key, both stored securely.

If a Private key somehow disclosed then the funds on the wallet get compromised.

For protecting the Private key wallets are using a passphrase that is nothing but the 12 to 24-word sentence or phrase used to create the Private key.

If you protect the passphrase your Privetkey is secured but, in this world security is just an illusion.

You can lose the passphrases in some natural calamities like flood fire or just put it somewhere and forget later where you put it and the passphrase even hard to remember.

So what if the passphrase is chosen by you that used to create Private key?

The Brain wallet made this idea become a reality.

A Brain wallet is nothing but the wallet which uses the passphrase created by the user, for creating Private and Public key, these passphrases are easy to remember because a user created it and at the same time hard to crack by any third party.

Basically, Brain wallet allows you to create the passphrase instead of creating one automatically but you have the responsibility to create a strong passphrase.

How Does a Brain Wallet Work?

As I mentioned above, a Brain wallet lets you chose the passphrases instead automatically generated one.

A passphrase typically contains the random words between 4,6,8,12 or 24 long.

The passphrases could be anything which you can easily remember like any important incident or date or number that only you know.

After feeding a passphrase to Brain wallet the wallet hashes the passphrase using SHA-256 script algorithm which considered as impossible to reverse.

Then that hash used to create a Private and Public key.

Once you got the Private and Public keys, you can easily store the funds in them anytime without worrying because now your private keys will only be generated through the “brain wallet” (which is in your head).

How To Create Bitcoin Brain Wallet?

You can use Bitcoin wallet software like Electronium, Mycelium, Armory to create Brain wallet.

There is nothing fancy in the User-Interface you just have to put your passphrase and confirm it, that’s it now your Private and Public keys appear on the screen.

The second method is using Brainwallet.io.

The Brainwallet.io differ from Bitaddress by offering a layer of protection to your passphrase called “SALT” also they ensure that all the record you typed not recorded on any servers.

SALT allows you to add username and passwords or Name, Phone, Date of Birth or any generic key praises to the passphrase because making it hard for any third party to accessing your wallet.

After filling the passphrase and Salt click on generate button and your wallet Private and Public keys arrived on the screen.

You can easily use the Private and Public keys to send and receive Bitcoin funds but, before creating a Brain wallet, you should consider some security advice to secure your Brian wallet.

  • Do not create a predictable passphrase like your Name, Date of Birth or any favourite sentences on the book and always blend up 2 or 3 or more things on a passphrase.
  • Use a BIP32 generator for your brain wallet because it uses a slow hash which is much harder to crack.
  • Use Mnemonic Pegging technique for remembering passphrase.
